International accounts make minerals the major, if not the sole, cause of the conflicts that have been ravaging eastern Congo for more than thirty years. In reality, we are witnessing an interweaving of factors combining inter-community tensions over land and power, competition between armed groups for economic control of territories, political manipulation of ethnicity and strategies of regional influence.
